24/5/2024 - 5pm - Parapoxvirus as platform for antigen delivery for vet vaccines - Mathias Martins - Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory · Virology/ DVM, MS, PhD- Mathias Martins holds a DVM, MS, and Ph.D. in Virology from the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria/RS, including a sandwich program at South Dakota State University. During his studies, he focused on the construction and characterization of parapoxvirus ovis (ORFV) recombinants for use as a vaccine platform for antigen delivery. Between 2018 and 2019, he served as a professor at Universidade do Oeste de Santa Catarina, teaching in the Veterinary School and Graduate Program. In early 2020, he transitioned to a Postdoctoral Fellow position at Cornell University, where his work concentrated on the development of viral platforms for antigen delivery. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, his primary research involved the development of animal models for studying SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis. Currently, he is the Chief of the Virology Section at the Texas A&M University Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory in College Station, Texas.

19/4/2024 - 9am - AI-Driven Small Molecule Design  - Douglas Eduardo Valente Pires - Director of Data Science at Exscientia - Douglas Pires holds a Ph.D. in Structural Bioinformatics and a BSc in Computer Science from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Cambridge, UK. Previously as an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne, he is now the Director of Data Science at Exscientia. Specializing in Data Science and Machine Learning applications in Bioinformatics, Cheminformatics, and Health, Pires is an international leader in Data Science, AI, and its applications. He has dedicated his career to developing Machine Learning tools that leverage omics and small molecule data to support drug discovery and personalized patient treatment and management. His leadership has been recognized with multiple honorary appointments, including Group Leader at the Bio21 Molecular Science & Biotechnology Institute and Chair of the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health (MACH) Data-Driven Healthcare Improvement Advisory Committee. Pires's pioneering work has been freely and easily made available to the community, democratizing access for non-specialists. Furthermore, his contributions are utilized at scale in both academia and industry, aiding in the development of safer drugs more rapidly, improving patient segregation in clinical trials, and supporting genetic counseling for rare diseases.
